The Palace Avenue Dance Orchestra is an authentic and highly swinging 14-piece dance band (9 horns + violin) that, with rare exception, only performs special arrangements of music recorded and released during the 1930s, with the emphasis on the early 1930s when this size of band of popular. The band performs a fully transcribed pad of music, with each song painstakingly taken down from original recordings and arranged specifically for the band, with feature numbers for each member.
The music that the band performs is mostly British and American dance band music chosen from this golden era of jazz, and the majority of the repertoire are real hidden gems. The rich, haunting melodies of Isham Jones, Lew Stone, Ambrose and Jack Hylton mix with distinctive and driving early 30s Fletcher Henderson, Nat Gonella, Cab Calloway, Jack Teagarden, Don Redman and Mills Blue Rhythm, all the way up to later 30s numbers from Artie Shaw, Goodman, Ellington and Dorsey. Hot numbers from Louis Armstrong’s incredible 1930s Orchestra are recreated with aplomb, and there is also Jimmy Lunceford’s blistering 300bpm White Heat, and Harlem Congo from Chick Webb included for especially for fast feet!
